                                         VINAGER WEED KILLER

How to Mix and Apply

Be sure to buy 50 percent from Amazon or 30 percent from Walmart. Regular kitchen strength will not do the trick.

Vinegar acts as a natural, non-selective herbicide. It works by rapidly pulling moisture out of the plant leaves, causing them to dry up and shrivel. [1, 2]

  • The Recipe: Combine 1 gallon of white vinegar, 1 cup of table or Epsom salt, and 1 tbsp of liquid dish soap. [1]
  • Ingredients Breakdown: The acetic acid in vinegar and the salt do the heavy lifting by dehydrating the weed. The dish soap acts as a surfactant, breaking the surface tension of the liquid so the vinegar clings tightly to the leaves rather than beading up and rolling off. [1, 2, 3]
  • Best Time to Spray: Apply the mixture on a bright, hot, and sunny day with no rain in the forecast. The heat and sunlight accelerate the drying process, ensuring the weed absorbs the mixture before it has a chance to recover.
  • Where to Use (and Where to Avoid)Because vinegar is a non-selective vegetation killer, it will scorch and damage any plant it touches. [1]
  • Ideal locations: Use it on gravel driveways, concrete patios, brick pathways, and sidewalk cracks.
  • Where to avoid: Do not spray this mixture in your vegetable garden, lawn, or near desirable flowers and shrubs.

                                                                     PROPER MULCHING

Around Plants

Clear all weeds from the garden bed. Spread a 2 to 3-inch layer of organic mulch—like shredded bark or compost—evenly around your plants. Crucially, leave a 2- to 3-inch gap of bare soil around stems, crowns, and tree trunks to prevent rot and keep out pests.
The Mulching Process Step-by-Step
1. Prep the Area
Before laying any material, pull existing weeds by hand or treat them. Rake up fallen leaves, sticks, and dead vegetation to start with a fresh canvas. If you need to add compost or an organic fertilizer, do so now so the nutrients make direct contact with your soil.
2. Choose Your Mulch
Selecting the right material depends on what you are growing:
Shredded Hardwood or Bark Chips: Excellent for flower beds, shrubs, and around trees. They break down slowly and provide a uniform, aesthetic look.
Straw, Hay, or Grass Clippings: Best for vegetable gardens. These are lightweight, easy to work around seedlings, and decompose relatively fast.
3. Apply the Mulch
To distribute the mulch efficiently without crushing your plants or garden edging:
Load a wheelbarrow with your mulch and drop it in small piles every few feet around the garden.
Use a bow rake (or your hands in tight, densely planted areas) to spread the mounds into an even, level layer.
Ensure the final depth is exactly 2 to 4 inches deep. Applying more than 4 inches can suffocate roots and prevent essential water and air from penetrating the soil.
4. Create a "Donut"
Do not pile mulch directly against the base of trees, shrubs, or the stems of perennials (often called "mulch volcanoes"). This creates a moist, dark environment that invites bark-gnawing rodents, wood-boring insects, and rot. Pull the mulch back to leave a clear 2- to 3-inch ring of bare soil around stems and 6 to 10 inches for larger tree trunks.
5. Watering In
After your garden is perfectly mulched, give the area a light watering. This helps settle the loose mulch into place so it stays put during windy days or heavy rain.

Are you tired of deer munching on your newly planted garden? Whether it's delicate shoots or fresh growth, these unwelcome visitors can wreak havoc on your carefully tended plants. But fear not, there's a simple and effective solution: homemade deer repellent.

We recommend spraying the following homemade deer repellent for at least 3 weeks on newly planted items every three days. If it rains or if you water, you must spray again. Also, in the spring, spray new growth to keep deer from eating the delicate new growth.

The Recipe for Homemade Liquid Fence:

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • Garlic cloves
  • Water (1 gallon)
  • Dish soap

Instructions:

  1. Crack the eggs and add them to a blender.
  2. Peel and add several cloves of garlic to the blender.
  3. Blend the mixture until smooth.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a bucket.
  5. Pour in one gallon of water.
  6. Add a small amount of dish soap to the mixture.
  7. Allow the mixture to sit in the sun for 24-48 hours.

Application:

  1. Once the mixture is ready, pour it into a pump sprayer.
  2. Spray the solution onto your plants, focusing on newly planted ones or areas with fresh growth.
  3. Repeat the spraying process every three days, especially after rainfall.
  4. In the spring, make sure to target new growth to deter young deer from developing a taste for your plants.

Why It Works:

The pungent odor of garlic and eggs combined with the soapy water creates a repellent scent that deer find unappealing. While harmless to plants and humans, it effectively deters deer from grazing on your garden.

Additional Tips:

  • Store the leftover mixture in a sealed container away from direct sunlight.
  • Be cautious when handling the mixture, as it can be quite smelly.
  • Consider applying the repellent early in the morning or late in the evening when deer are most active.

By following these simple steps, you can protect your garden from deer damage and enjoy a flourishing landscape all season long. Say goodbye to unwanted nibbling and hello to a thriving garden!
